Das erste Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival fand am 9. und 10. Oktober 1999 statt. Rund 25.000 Besucher sahen Auftritte von Bands wie Beck, The Chemical Brothers, Tool, Morrissey und Rage Against the Machine.

Das zehnte Jubiläum des Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festivals begann am 17. und endete am 19. April 2009.

Bereits 1993 spielten mit Tool und Pearl Jam die ersten Rockbands auf dem Gelände des Empire Polo Club. Das erste Festival fand am 9. und 10. Oktober 1999 statt. Rund 25.000 Besucher sahen Auftritte von Bands wie Beck, The Chemical Brothers, Tool, Morrissey und Rage Against the Machine. Im Jahr 2000 fand wegen finanzieller Probleme der Veranstalter kein Festival statt. Ein Jahr später fand das Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival am 28. April statt, um das Budget zu reduzieren und der Hitze des Sommers auszuweichen. Als Headliner konnte Jane’s Addiction gewonnen werden, die sich für das Festival wiedervereinte. 2002 spielten an zwei Tagen unter anderem Siouxsie and the Banshees, Björk und Oasis, ein Jahr später traten Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys und The Stooges mit Iggy Pop als „Iggy and the Stooges“ auf.

Für das Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 2004 konnten zum ersten Mal alle 50.000 Karten verkauft werden. An zwei Tagen traten neben weiteren Pixies, Radiohead, Kraftwerk und The Cure auf. Die 2007er Ausgabe des Festivals fand wieder an drei Tagen statt. Neben Red Hot Chili Peppers und Björk spielte die wiedervereinigte Band Rage Against the Machine vor 100.000 Zuschauern.

In den kommenden Ausgaben spielten Bands wie Prince, Tegan and Sara, Portishead, Kraftwerk, Death Cab for Cutie, Roger Waters, Jack Johnson, Fatboy Slim, Kanye West, The Strokes, Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, Radiohead, The Black Keys, Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phoenix, The Stone Roses, Blur, Outkast, Muse und viele mehr.

Das Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival findet auch im Jahr 2023 wieder an zwei aufeinander folgenden Wochenenden DOPPELT statt - vom 14.-16.04. und vom 21.-23.04.2021.
